The explosion in illegal border crossings appears to be drawing down as the number of apprehended Central Americans continues to decline, according to the number of apprehensions in the Tucson sector.
Apprehensions are down to approximately 3,000 from nearly 12,000 in March, which reflects a drop of nearly 75 percent. The decrease is the first drop in border-crossings in more than a year.
Border Patrol officials said they believe the decrease is due to lower numbers of people attempting to cross into the U.S. from Mexico. A report from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection stated that from March of last year to March this year, border-crossings were down 63 percent. The majority of those border crossings were Mexicans attempting to enter the U.S.
"We see every day what a direct result of the tough immigration laws that were put in place after 9/11 and the economic downturn is," Tucson Sector Chief Patrol Agent Rodolfo Karisch told KGUN 9 News. "We know the economic downward spiral is going on and [that] we cannot depend on the government to hire us, we need to go out and hire the people that we need."
In June, Karisch told Breitbart Texas that the border sector's agents, working with their law enforcement partners, were facing a backlog of about 3,000 people.
Since that time, Karisch has worked with the Secretary of Homeland Security to hire additional agents and has also worked to hire additional support personnel. Karisch is working with the state of Arizona and local law enforcement agencies to hire, train and place additional special agents to work the border.
"It's not a 'can do' attitude," Karisch told Breitbart Texas. "This sector is going to be a bit undermanned at times and when we get close to the fall and winter months we are going to be even more undermanned. We are going to have agents with very little experience."
